Book overview

Tristen is both more and less than a man. A summoning, a shaping, he was brought to life by a wizard, to serve a king yet to be crowned.

Now the wizard is dead: a united Ylesuin, and a peace this land has never known. Cefwyn needs his only friend, this young man of mysterious origins who is more brother than vassal. He relies on Tristen, and trusts him though he knows not why, as he plans the war that will bring his dream to pass...or bring ruin upon them all.

The eagerly awaited sequel to her acclaimed Fortress in the Eye of Time, C.J. Cherryh's newest high fantasy triumph is an epic saga of destiny and intrigue in a magical world as wondrous, and as real, as our own.

I've written sf and fantasy for publication since 1975...but I've written a lot longer than that. I have a background in Mediterranean archaeology, Latin, Greek, that sort of thing; my hobbies are travel, photography, planetary geology, physics, pond-building for koi...I run a marine tank, can plumb most anything, and I figure-skate.

I believe in the future: I'm an optimist for good reason---I've studied a lot of history, in which, yes, there is climate change, and our species has been through it. We've never faced it fully armed with what we now know, and if we play our cards right, we'll use it as a technological springboard and carry on in very interesting ways.

I also believe a writer owes a reader a book that has more than general despair to spread about: I write about clever, determined people who don't put up with situations, not for long, anyway: people who find solutions inspire me.

The prose is breathtaking; not only what she's saying, but how she's saying it; very, very beautiful writing, and powerful, a sensory enchantment that Cherryh maintains from first page to last. In terms of generating extraordinarily beautiful visual imagery, the opening pages rival anything I've ever read. Pure magic.

The storyline in ...Eagles follows very effectively from the first book in the series, ...Eye of Time, and furthers the various plot lines in interesting and unexpect-able ways. Even after a many readings over the years, Cherryh's storytelling in this book, and the rest of the series, remains captivating for me. Other than JRR Tolkien's work, CJ Cherryh's novels are the only books I never hesitate to take back off the shelf.

This Kindle edition, though, is atrocious. Having read the hard copy edition so many times, I know what the words are supposed to be, and I still have the hard copy for comparison. This Kindle book clearly wasn't proofed at all by an English-speaking human being, much less someone familiar with the book who knows what the words are supposed to be.

There are so many errors, on average one per page, and sometimes several per page; gross misspellings, words left out of the text... In a couple of cases, entire sentences are missing.

If you are new to this series, or Cherryh's writings in general, stay away from this Kindle version. Even at the low price, it's not worth your dime, and misrepresents the author, and disrespects her readers' time and money.

The book itself is a treasure, and worth a little delay in getting it. Buy a used hard copy; they go for 99 cents from at least one online used book seller. It takes a couple of days longer to get the book that way, but you'll have the actual book, not scan-error facsimile.

When the Fortress series started in 1996 you would have had to beat me with a stick to get me to read something I would have considered a boring plod of a book. Now,I savor reads like this and actually seek them out. Strange what time does to a person beside just bringing wrinkles. Fortress of Eagles is the second of the series and carries on in a world that resembles pre-gunpowder feudal England with constant feuding and fighting between people, regions and countries. The ending of book one,Fortress in the Eye of Time had our young, inncent and quite likable protagonist emerging victorious from the first engagement of what promises to be a long struggle against a neighboring country. Book two is a comparably quick read at only 496 pages ,so by Cherryh's standards of preparing the ground well she only has room to set up for the oncoming military action. And she sets it up very well. Cherryh is educated in and taught the classics until she retired to become a full time writer. With that solid background it is no surprise that I found the byzantine palace politics that comprise the majority of this book not only readable but quite entertaining. At its heart this is still a sword and sorcery novel and occasionally blades do clear the scabbards and magic will rear its head so fans need despair not. Written with a skill all too rare the author continues to satisfying discerning readers of the genre and the occasional dabbler as well. Recommended.

It took me months to get through the first book, Fortress in the Eye of Time. Actually, I guess I can say it took me years, because I've tried reading this series before and failed, more than once. I even had to eventually re-buy the first book because I lost it somewhere along the way. However, I did finally manage to get through it. However, I did it in fits and starts and bits and pieces. I would pick it up and bravely persevere, and then put it down for something more interesting and intriguing. Finally, I got through it, and I was daunted to start book two. I love C.J Cherryh, she my favorite author, but this series was tough to get into. It was much like the entire first book, with out main character and supposed hero, Tristen, wandering around and doing things without knowing what he's doing, acting on instinct, being utterly confused and totally lost and really just like an ignorant child in a man's body. He's constantly saying he's sorry, and he doesn't know, and asking people if he did wrong. There are pages and pages of internal dialogue and just a circling of doubt and ignorance. So, I began book two, and honestly, the beginning of Fortress of Eagles was just as slow as book one, and I was so disappointed and frustrated, I almost put it down. I was so sick and tired of Tristen wandering around like a half wit fool. Then, it suddenly got very interesting. Things begin to fall into place for Tristen. He strikes out on his own, and his learning and understanding of people and war and kingdoms is refreshing and stimulating while his continuing confusion regarding secret motivations, suspicions of betrayal and hidden enemies makes for some very exciting actions and reactions. He still makes mistakes, but he also makes some right choices. Some fear him and others love him, some support him and others are trying to unseat him. There are underhanded, selfish betrayals and political maneuvering, and its hard to tell who is friend and who is foe.

Books three and four have proven to be even more exciting. It took me months to read books one and two (this one) but I've read books three and four in one week!
